It is now part of eight stackable bangles and much more fun to wear.

Another stack of Southwest inspired cuffs and bangle. The icon bracelet I made from a silver leather belt while the brass bangle with the dangles is intuitively made from free formed brass wire. Two of the other silver cuffs were a very cool thrift store find while the silver cuff with the inlay turquoise was a gift. I hope these will inspire you to combine your own personal stacks.

freeform needle weave necklace

Found three beautiful shells that someone gave me, added a few handcrafted glass beads that I made a few years back, a couple of tiny mirrors, a crystal faceted teardrop, and lots of silk fiber. Free form needle weave all of that, add a few seed beads and adorn your neck.

Mixed media collage on the back of a playing card...I think I have jewelry burn out. That should last for about 48 hours. When that happens, I usually draw and paint in my Faces Journal...today it was on a playing card that I found amongst my collage papers. I also posted 30 some paintings. I'm addicted to fabric bangles, fabric beads, fabric anything. Especially when beading is included.
The focal bead of this long bohemian necklace is just that. The treasure tassel is made of repurposed elements plus a beautiful curved mother of pearl sea shell, a gift from a student from Australia. This necklace did not make it to my Etsy shop.

Because I usually work in series, below is another version of the Bead Soup necklace. This one is titled TEQUILA AND LIME. It will be posted on my ETSY shop.

Title: TEQUILA AND LIME

Many have commented on how they enjoy my titles. I title every piece of art I create and have fun collecting those titles. This is what I do....I always keep a journal with me and read any article from any paper or magazine from the bottom up. Yes, that's right, from the bottom up.
By reading this way I am not distracted by the article itself. I let words and phrases pop into my head and they become fun and interesting titles. I number and write these "titles" in my Title Journal. When I finish creating a piece of artwork, I go down my list of titles and choose the one that fits. I cross off that title so that it is not used again. Today I have 5 journals going and more than 6,000 titles. I started this while traveling to Japan to teach. (how many books can you read on an 18 hour flight) Out of boredom, I started scanning a newspaper column from the bottom up. and noticed words that went together and formed phrases. I highlighted them and later wrote them in a journal. That's how my Title Journals were born. So....if you find highlighted newspapers and magazines in airplanes, doctors offices, launder mats, park benches, bus stops, etc. That was probably me reading from the bottom up.

Many of my students keep a Title Journal and say that it cuts the thinking time when they are ready to title their artwork. It also something to do when you can't sleep.

Pearls, Denim and Lace...a cuff made of recycled denim and a ton of seed beads all sewed by hand. Very textural and very beautiful. Something for the cowgirl bride, something old (the lace) and something blue. You can see other views on my Etsy store.

Found a scrap of fabric with the cutest cats you have ever seen. Not enough fabric for the collage panels I have been making for the poet bags that you can see here, but, enough to make a cute kitty necklace for the cat lover in you. The necklace in actually a long necklace, 21 inches from top to bottom, but can be shortened upon request. Layers of frayed fabric, buttons, a long black bone like bead dangle and a charm that reads "gentle". The neck cord is part beaded fabric, vintage chain, and handmade frayed fabric beads that look like gently used scratching posts. Available now for purchase or at vendor day Art Unraveled.

As much as I love earrings, I don't make many because after I make one earring I don't want to have to make another to match, I made a large set of hoop earrings, pink for springtime. Had a wonderful play day with the fabulous JoAnna Pierotti, whom I finally got to meet and we became fast friends. We painted watercolor faces and had a show and tell of each others work. Each piece of art and art jewelry got their share of praise. JoAnna's studio is filled with the cutest doll faces you will ever see. The photographs do not do them justice. Her wonderful husband Ron became Mr. Meals on Wheels...he went and got us lunch...how sweet is that...

collage necklace

My collages seem to be getting smaller and smaller. Other than they are so fun to make, I just can not get rid of even the smallest pieces of paper. I keep a box for all the bits of paper that practically need tweezers to handle them. Sometimes my intention is to go though the box and toss a few, but then I find myself arranging and gluing and a collage happens. This one is 1.5X1.5 in size. I decided to treat it as a cabochon and edged it with bead embroidery. Went perfect with a bunch of faux resin beads that I had made....sort of an art hanging, not on a wall but around the neck.

I call this "Stamp and Doodle" art. I try to keep a small sheet of watercolor paper close by when I am painting. As I stamp onto my work, I also stamp onto the watercolor paper at random to clean the stamp. When I run out of room, I doodle over the stamped images and watercolor over that. Sometimes it's art...sometimes it's aren't.

Mitch was born on the thirteenth of February, when I finished the shrine, I counted the candles and there were thirteen. The embellishment at the bottom of the shrine is off of a necklace that I was wearing on the day he passed. On January 24, 2009...his daughter Nicole Celaya, my granddaughter, left us and went to join him. I miss you guys very much.

For those who kindly wrote asking about "a bottle of ink in a pencil",

here is a photo of a demonstration on beginning portraiture. The class is about drawing the face and, painting it in colors that are and are not done in common "flesh tones." The "ink in a pencil" is very much like a watercolor pencil but is indelible. I draw onto dry paper and manipulate with sponges, or I draw onto a damp/wet surface to see where it takes me. The post below has a link with a photo of the pencil. This has been one of my favorite tools for many years...you will find it used in many of my pieces.

Title: SUMMER EVENING

I did the drawing with one of my favorite tools, "a bottle of ink in a pencil" over a tissue collaged surface. You can see the pencil HERE. Went on to paint in watercolor along with refining the image using Caran D' Ache watercolor crayons and pencils. See these HERE. This painting was featured in a calendar a couple of years ago.

These tools are a staple in my work....love teaching with them.

Title: TEN MINUTE BREAK

When I paint on a flat surface, I like to cover the surface with newspaper. One reason is that I like to paint beyond the edges of my work, the second reason is that I can use the newspaper to clean off my brushes and scrappers. The papers are dried and saved for later use in collages and other works.

I used one such paper to do a quick drawing demonstration and later finished it in watercolor.

After teaching Altered Paper Surfaces in Colorado, I found a very nice piece of paper that had a wonderful surface texture with what reminded me of roots. Thus, the title of this mini collage. Only 3.5 x 5 this very simple collage delivers a lot of punch, and reminds me of the Rocky Mountains.

Drawing and Composition is taught as part of Exploration Mixed Media and my Watercolor Workshops. A photograph and a rough thumbnail sketch is necessary in order to compose what you are going to paint. The photograph posted here is good subject matter, but the composition is all wrong. The tree on the upper left forms a square shape as does the sky. The telephone post and wires are best removed. The interesting texture of the white bush is lost in the photo. These two paintings were done by two of my local students. The first one by Anthony Hall is a life drawing done in conte over a black and sepia ink pour. He allowed some of the ink forms to become shaded areas for the figures. White conte was used to emphasise the highlighted areas. Good work Anthony....
The second painting is by Ella Holland. Ella started as an oil painter and has moved on to watercolor and mixed media. The small collage using hand altered surface papers by Ella is definitely eye candy. Contact artwithmoxie@cox.net for class information.

A small peek at what I have been doing...Art Unraveled has come and gone and now it's time to submit for next year. Ten days before convention I fell ( not so gracefully) and injured both knees. Sooo....I have been sitting a lot making art jewelry and painting small watercolors in preparation for some workshops. I will be posting some of the pieces on both of my blogs.

This is Kayla's first watercolor/collage, that's a painted half of a paper plate (found object) on top of her watercolor painting. I have used a photo of her and her painting, paper napkins from a trade, watercolor paint, and butterflies because they are her favorite. My collage to her is 11x15...what you see is just a portion of the painting.... she will be 5 on July 17.

klimt challenge

Gustav Klimt is one of my favorite artist's. When Sharon Tomlinson suggested a challenge inspired by Klimt, I jumped at the chance. The approach to the 5x8 collage, is not the norm for me. (another challenge) I started with a scrap of an old watercolor painting, layered some transparent and opaque handcrafted papers, and proceeded to paint the face and hand with acrylics. Circles were cut from magazine pages and collaged in jig saw fashion along with two three dimentional doodle motifs. Handpainted textures finish the background. Here is a close up of the Frottage Painting. When I did the rubbing on the icon, I positioned the rubber stamp so that I would get a halo effect and avoided rubbing wax onto her face. The piece of frottage that is glued to the upper right corner, has silver wax lines that stop at the white and blue shape. I continued the flow of the lines using white acrylic to unify. There are three gold spots that break up the large orange shape. Line and shape was used to keep the viewer inside the painting. Scroll down to post #1 to read the tutorial. #3 frottage mini tutorial

Rip and arrange your frottages (rubbings) into a pleasant composition paying attention to the elements of design. I teach using five elements, line, shape, color, value, and texture. Move the images around until they feel right to you, and glue them onto the substrate with a light application of good old Elmers glue. I have used this glue for years and have not had any yellowing of my papers. Note: The bottom section of the icon frottage was ripped off and part was used on the upper right and mid left side of the collage. Unify the shapes using colored pencils, acrylic paint, chalks, etc. On this painting I used white acrylic paint and added a touch of gold leaf. Detail on post #4.

Choose the tactile surfaces to do your rubbings. I chose one of my art stamps, and a clear plastic texture sheet.

Look around you and experiment rubbing differant surfaces. I also chose a photo from an old newspaper and rubbed it on the large stamp with a block of silver and blue encaustic. You can see a piece of it on the lower left hand corner. You can use crayons, candles etc. If you are going to use your rubbings for collage, you will need a substrate. I cut an old watercolor collage that had been in incubation for years into small pieces. I collaged on a 9x6 piece. Gather your collage elements and go to the #3 post.

Frottage: A rubbing technique where print images are obtained by placing paper over a tactile surface and rubbing it with wax, crayon, or pencil. The elements on this post are: a newsprint photo of an icon rubbed with silver and blue encaustic wax over the large stamp, white handcrafted parchment paper rubbed over a clear plastic texture sheet with blue encaustic wax, and a yellow and red handcrafted tissue paper, rubbed over the modern angel stamp and the circular shell stamp using encaustic wax. You may use any paper you like so long as it is not too thick...experiment. I love doing frottages over newsprint. Please overlook my stained stamps, they get a workout. Polyclay...haven't worked with this medium in a long time, so I chose it for the Mixed Media Monday challenge. All except the tiny beads is done with polyclay. The frog was made using a mold which I also made from polyclay. Great molds can be found here.

This tiny collage honors my mother...the most creative person I ever knew. She taught me to see beauty in everything, applauded my every creative efforts and left me all to soon. The images in this little collage remind me of the teeny flowering weeds that push through the cracks of the cement walkway, staying minutes it seems, just long enough to bring beauty and pleasure. I miss you mom....

I have been demonstrating collage and the principle elements of design for my evening class. This collage is about texture. Among the bits and pieces of collage papers was an empty tea bag envelope. As everyone knows, if it doesn't move, it will get glued onto a collage surface. Theme Thursday's challenge for this week is tea/coffee. I stamped in the word tea along with hand made papers and two images from my line of art stamps.

Moxie Movement is in full force...the students who attended the first session of Exploration Mixed Media in Fort Collins, Colorado got a taste of creating an original design, painting in mixed media, art stamping, watercolor basics, collage, and much more. Each student introduced personal images into their work and left with an original work of art. Upon their return in July for the second session, home assignments will be evaluated and new techniques and processes will be introduced. One process will be painted out doors, you may see a photo sample titled "Napa" on the homepage of my website, www.artwithmoxie.com

A transfer of a "school teacher" with see through text in her face.
